Wyspa. Ma swoje zalety i wady. Bardzo polubiliśmy szczególnie te mniejsze, jak Wyspy Książęce, Adę, Brač czy teraz Gozo. Nie chodzi więc o większe byty jak Irlandia czy Wielka Brytania – raczej o ich siostrzyczki i braciszków jak Iona, Skye, Man itp.
Należeliśmy do tej pory do fanów wysp doceniając przede wszystkim, że:
– łatwiej się odizolować,
– jest ciszej i spokojniej,
– powietrze jest niesamowicie czyste,
– panuje większe zaufanie społeczne, np. często nie zapina się rowerów,
– są piękne widoki niemal z dowolnego miejsca.
Jednak ostatnie parę miesięcy uświadomiło nam też pewne ich wady:
– bywa drogo, bo wiele rzeczy trzeba przywieźć z lądu,
– rzeczy niszczeją inaczej – rdzewieją szybciej,
– jesteś zdany na łaskę żywiołów, przede wszystkim wiatru i wody.
Uświadomiliśmy sobie tutaj, że śmieci zostają, że dostępność słodkiej wody może być problemem, że weganom może przyjść się zmierzyć z koniecznością bycia wegetarianami przez jakiś czas (albo głodować), że… wyspa Malta jest mniejsza od Wolina!
Island. It has its advantages and disadvantages. We have always been very fond of the smaller ones like Princes’ Islands, Ada, Brač or Gozo. So this piece is not about the larger buddies like Ireland or Great Britain – it is rather about their little sisters and brothers like Iona, Skye, Man, etc.
We have appreciated features such as:
– You get a sense of isolation.
– It is generally about the peace and quiet.
– The air quality is outstanding.
– There is a greater trust among islanders, e.g. bicycles can often be left with no lock.
– There are usually beautiful views from almost any place.
The last few months have made us aware of some drawbacks, though:
– The life can be expensive, because many things have to be brought from the mainland.
– Things deteriorate differently – we think they rust faster.
– You are at the mercy of the elements, especially wind and water.
We have realized that garbage remains on the island, that the availability of fresh water may be a problem, that vegans may need to compromise and go vegetarian for a while (or starve), that … the island of Malta is smaller than Poland’s biggest island – Wolin!
